Chunky Move, Restless Dance Theatre & Candoco Dance Company
Choreographed and directed by Antony Hamilton, Rewards For The Tribe is an international collaboration between Chunky Move (Melbourne), Candoco Dance Company (UK) and Restless Dance Theatre (Adelaide). The work is being co-commissioned by a number of major Australian and international presenters and will premiere in the UK in October 2021.
This ambitious collaborative dance work for artists with and without disability will explore the social order of the group; using notions of action, labor, cooperation, creativity, inclusion and acceptance. Rewards For The Tribe ritualises the aspirations and expectations that underpin our collective human endeavour in order to celebrate difference and the rewards of collaboration.
Rewards For The Tribe will look at the expectations we place on ourselves, how we manage when those expectations are unmet, the challenges of striving for perfection and questioning the idea of perfection itself.
Chunky Move has been at the forefront of Australian contemporary dance for nearly 25 years. Founded by Artistic Director, Gideon Obarzanek and Executive Producer, Angharad Wynne-Jones in 1995 as Victoria’s flagship contemporary dance company, Chunky Move established itself as one of the Australia’s most innovative, awarded and recognised performing arts companies. In 2019, following the Artistic Directorship of acclaimed Dutch Choreographer Anouk van Dijk (2012-18), the company transitioned to a vibrant new leadership team of Artistic Director/co-CEO Antony Hamilton, Executive Director/co-CEO Kristy Ayre and Senior Producer Freya Waterson.
Restless Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading dance theatre company working with people with and without disability. The company invigorates, influences and diversifies dance by creating innovative and highly distinctive works of dance theatre. Restless is a place where diversity is celebrated and artists thrive creatively. Restless is led by Artistic Director, Michelle Ryan who has created 5 major works since her appointment in 2013.
Candoco Dance Company is a world-leading professional dance company based in the UK. Bridging the mainstream and the experimental, our bold approach and powerful collaborations create distinctive performances and far-reaching learning experiences. We strengthen our company’s social impact using dynamic performance, advocacy and learning to broaden perceptions of art and ability and to inspire, change and campaign for increased access and diversity in the cultural sector and beyond. Candoco has a permanent ensemble of seven and is led by Artistic Director Charlotte Darbyshire.
