ABOUT THE PROJECT

宿 (stay) is a new interdisciplinary theatre work inspired by the cultural traditions of South and East Asia. Its story is drawn from the real life experiences of the collaborating artists.

Two skeletons are discovered in the dried up creek bed of a remote Australian farm: and the fates of three women, thousands of kilometres apart, become deeply intertwined.

Tsuet-Cheng is returning from her high-powered Sydney job to Singapore for “Tomb Sweeping Day”. A Chinese ritual where families visit cemeteries to talk with their  ancestors. Hers’ is a story of globalism, comfort and disconnection that lies at the heart of city life.

Selene faces losing her family farm after five generations of tending. Until she meets Violet, whose ancestors were custodians of that land for over 65,000 years before Selene’s ancestors stole it from them. Theirs is the story of localism, buried trauma and fragile connections that lie at the heart of rural life.

Each woman is about to confront some uncomfortable truths about her past – and find  surprising paths  to reconciliation.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Kurinji led by S. Shakthidharan (Counting & Cracking) and Aimée Falzon (Laka) tells new Australian stories that are both epic and intimate, global and communal. Our productions are multi-sensory and immerse our audiences into other worlds. Whether it be theatre, film, music or interdisciplinary art, all of our work features new, original writing, music and design.

Collaborators, SAtheCollective are a Singapore-based interdisciplinary & multicultural performing arts company who work nationally and internationally. They bring their own brand of experimental music, defined by a mix of traditional instruments & electronics, & audio-visuals, to their creative process.
