Leaps + Beats

Deep Soulful Sweats, DJ Sui Zhen, Amrita Hepi and Aarti Jadu

For the Immigration Museum’s Leaps + Beats, join local dance luminaries Deep Soulful Sweats (Sarah Aiken and Rebecca Jensen) lead a guided astrological dance class-meets-rave-meets-ritual experience, alongside DJ Sui Zhen, and artist-in-residence Amrita Hepi. Participants are divided into elements based on star signs (earth, air, fire, water) for this inclusive experience in our Long Room. No spectators, no steps to be learned and no dance experience necessary! All welcome but bookings essential.

Later in the Courtyard, vocalist, composer and producer Aarti Jadu delivers a live solo set spanning her many influences and practices from Indian, choral, chant and experimental realms, to create an exhilarating space beyond genre. With vocals at once wild and ethereal, Aarti is unafraid to delve into a dark ambience of reverberating deep sub bass set against floating angelic harmonies.

Date & Time From 6.30pm, 26 February 2020

Live Solo Set in the Courtyard Aarti Jadu

Sarah Aiken and Rebecca Jensen/ Deep Soulful Sweats create work that engages rigorously with participation, scale, waste and reckless formalism- recycling content to consider materiality and how we come together. Recent works include What Am I Supposed To Do? (WAISTD) (Arts Centre Melbourne/Melbourne Fringe 2019. Winner Melbourne Festival Discovery Award, Greenroom Award nominee) and cult classic Deep Soulful Sweats- a shape-shifting participatory astrology dance performance without spectators.
