GATHERING INFO

The APAM Gathering at Darwin Festival brings together a collection of virtual and real-life happenings highlighting the works, ideas and ambitions of Australian and New Zealand artists and companies.

The APAM Gathering at Darwin Festival will focus on works which consider diversity in form and practice, works which sit seemingly alongside a multi-artform festival and are driven through collaboration. In curating Profile within the Gathering at Darwin Festival, we want to hear about works which consider space and site.

For our third APAM Gathering we continue to find new ways to stay connected and active with our peers. The global performing arts community faces continued challenges from disruption and these concerns are at the forefront of this Gathering’s purpose.

Picking up from the conversation from where we left off in Adelaide during the DreamBIG Gathering, we’ll focus on how we can work together to shift power structures, build community locally and abroad and strengthen our relationships to one another.

Full program details will be available at the end of May 2021.

HEADING TO DARWIN

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin region. Larrakia country runs from Cox peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards. Larrakia are a vibrant Aboriginal nation numbering around 2,000 people. They are broadly recognised for their strengths in performance, music and art. Larrakia feel particularly strongly about their role as Traditional Owners for the Territory’s capital, looking after visitors to their country.  They aim to foster partnerships according to the cultural protocols, which they ask visitors to understand and respect. (APAM acknowledges Larrakia Nation whose words we are sharing here.)

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, with an estimated population of 147,255 made up of people from more than 60 nationalities and 70 different ethnic backgrounds. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End’s regional centre. It has evolved from its days as a laid back frontier town and while it still retains its relaxed charm, it has become a sophisticated city. The city is characterised by its many exciting cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets.

Darwin in August is a glorious place to be. It’s the dry season, with average daily temperature 30 C much lower humidity than other times of year. There’s no better time to enjoy a visit, but we recommend you get organised early.

Flights to and from Darwin are limited, so you’ll want to book well in advance. Accommodation also fills up quickly so we suggest you get in touch with one of our accommodation partners soon.
