Sundowner

Imagine this:

It is becoming increasingly difficult to discern the difference between the present and the past, between what is familiar and what is foreign. Events that took place just minutes ago are being constantly erased, while memories that you have been able to keep at bay for decades now come rushing towards you.

Despite the explorations of poets, novelists, doctors, scientists and philosophers, the realm of memory remains a great mystery. And Sundowner's Syndrome remains an unanswered question. Why is it that as the sun goes down, so many with Alzheimer's become disorientated and confused?

KAGE, in partnership with Alzheimer's Australia, invites you into this intrigue.

This breathtaking performance traverses sorrow, fears, humour and dignity. Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner tells the story of many families.

If a loved one starts to lose their memories, what role can we play in holding onto them? If our parent is no longer the person we know, how can we care for them in the present and honour their memory?

Sundowner is a story of lament and at times grief and sorrow. Ultimately, though, it is a story of love: love of family, love of history, and love of life.

KAGE

KAGE creates exceptional live performance work. Visually stunning, arrestingly provocative, humorous and humane, KAGE uses honesty and imagination to continually explore and redefine what performance can be. Technically rigorous and visually striking dance theatre becomes a platform to explore risky and challenging subject matter. KAGE is dedicated to generating performance that resonates and engages audiences in an honest and meaningful way and which lingers long after the performance has ended.

Central to KAGE’s philosophy is to engage with leading artists from diverse creative disciplines as well as with targeted communities. More than dance, not quite theatre, not circus, or poems or dreams but like these… KAGE strikes out for new ground, innovating and re-conceiving dance to draw humour, humanity and pathos from the physicality of human bodies.

KAGE is the creative partnership of Kate Denborough and Gerard Van Dyck. Meeting whilst completing a Bachelor of Dance at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1992, the two formed an immediate and unique affiliation. Kate and Gerard's visionary partnership has sparked for fifteen years. Since its performance debut in 1997, KAGE has propelled dance theatre into fresh territory, claiming international awards, recognition and new audiences along the way.
