en route

en route is a mobile event for pedestrians incorporating audio, mobile phones, urban streetscapes, walking, passers-by and cafes. Using the technique of the ‘derive’ – informed and aware wandering with continuous observation – it invites participants on a journey, inward and outward, through the thoroughfares and back-alleys of the city and their own observations and responses.

Directions, instructions and audio - snatches of narrative, musings, sound, song, dialogue, and philosophy – intertwine with wandering and found experiences, opening up a field for multiple ways of seeing the city, themselves and others. An experience in which the private and the public, imaginary and concrete, intersect and overlap.

en route poses questions about where and how the creative act may be sited - in place and in the participant - and what form it may take. It invites participants to be co-creators of the piece; writers and re-writers of the cityscape.

As a touring work with a minimal footprint, en route curates place-specific urban spaces, buildings, public art and music, in a cultural exchange with local artists.

and Richard Jordan Productions

one step at a time like this works are generated from a collaborative investigation and informed by an emphasis on relationships, between the 'being-present' of the audience, the specifics of place, and the work itself. The connective nature of the works reflects the company's interest in engaging audience members in the activity, and by extension, the creation of the work.

one step… works include: en route (Chicago Shakespeare Theatre World Stage Series 2011, Mobile States Tour 2011, Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2010, Darwin Festival 2010, Brisbane Laneways Fiesta 2010, Adelaide Fringe Festival 2010 Winner - Best Theatre Production, Melbourne Fringe Festival 2009 Winner: Best Live Art Award + 2 Green Room Awards 2009), Southern Crossings, a multi-platform audio journey at Southern Cross train station (City of Melbourne Arts & Participation Program Commission 2010 Winner: Green Room Award 2010); Pop Up Project (Melbourne International Arts Festival Commission 2010), Contemplating Gold, a walk-in outdoor cinema installation (Castlemaine, presented by Punctum 2009), Pillow Talk, a bed for casual discourse (Arts House Commission Look Out Between Season 2009).

one step… co-produces worldwide with UK based award-winning producer Richard Jordan and is a recipient of a London 2012 Festival Cultural Olympiad Commission to create en route in East London, co-presented with Theatre Royal Stratford East.
