Hyperspheres

Speak Percussion presents a dynamic program of works for percussion. Hyperspheres samples some of Australia's best avant-garde percussion music through to conceptual performance works that have together defined Speak's unique aesthetic.

Deborah Hay – seeing, seeing, seeing.
A solo percussion work choreographed and adapted by legendary American choreographer Deborah Hay, especially for Speak Percussion artistic director Eugene Ughetti. Using a gong, stick and an empty stage the performer traverses the space etching sound, singing silences and moving in songlines.

Thomas Meadowcroft – The Great Knot for percussion trio and electronics.
Thomas Meadowcroft is one of Australia’s most innovative percussion composers. Based in Berlin since 1998, Meadowcroft has startled Europe with his distinctive sound and unorthodox performance techniques. The Great Knot is inspired by the lo-fi sounds of a Casio keyboard, layering delicate rhythmic textures that evoke a forgotten sound world.

Anthony Pateras – Refractions for percussion sextet.
Anthony Pateras, the wunderkind of Australia’s avant-garde scene, has gained international acclaim for his visceral and genre-defying language. Refractions augments the familiar sounds of drums with a world of scraped shot glasses, scrap metal, stone, bamboo and ceramic tiles.

These works represent the current Australian works in repertoire that Speak Percussion is planning to tour both nationally and internationally.

Speak Percussion

Speak Percussion is Australia’s most innovative percussive arts organisation. For over ten years, Speak Percussion has existed beyond new music practice and has developed a distinct hybrid language. Speak have commissioned and championed over 60 new Australian compositions and have collaborated with architects, choreographers, instrument builders, astronomers and a chef.

Speak Percussion tours internationally, presenting the freshest new Australian music and collaborating in the creation of new cross-cultural works. The group has featured in many of Australia’s leading contemporary music festivals, including MONA FOMA (Hobart), Melbourne International Arts Festival, Queensland Music Festival, Liquid Architecture and the Totally Huge New Music Festival (Perth).

In 2011, Speak Percussion was a finalist for the APRA/ AMCOS Art Music    Awards in the Performance of the Year category. Its premiere performance of Anthony Pateras’s Flesh and Ghost was chosen by ABC Classic FM as the best ABC recorded performance of a new Australian work for 2010-11, to represent Australia at the International Rostrum of Composers in Vienna.  Speak Percussion is supported by Arts Victoria.

"...sent the audience once again into a frenzy. It was power playing at its best." - The Age.

"At the end, the roar from the floor lifted the roof off the primitive performance space where four young men and one woman dazzled in a display that said all things positive about contemporary entertainment for the now generation." - The Australian.
