Angela’s Kitchen
Written by Paul Capsis & Julian Meyrick

In 1948, Angela left Malta. Having gathered up five children, she sailed out on the ‘Strathnavar’, leaving poverty and the war behind. Her destination: Australia. In Sydney she could build a bright new life.

Back in Malta, someone else has made a journey. Making his way along Kalkara’s glistening harbourside, a young man with flowing black hair has returned to claim his past. Paul Capsis is walking home.

Angela’s Kitchen is an astonishingly evocative piece of autobiographical theatre from one of Australia’s most celebrated performers. A journey that begins at a kitchen table becomes a portrait, not just of a much loved matriarch, but of a whole generation.

Paul Capsis seamlessly and often hilariously brings to life the extraordinary characters of his family. Angela’s story provides a window into an ordinary life made of epic stuff: war, death, courage, endurance. By letting us glimpse through Angela’s window, Paul asks how much we know about where we came from and what has made us who we are today.

‘At the end, he shares his most precious memories with the audience, many of whom were holding back tears. Deeply affecting theatre.’ - Sun Herald

Griffin’s home venue, the SBW Stables Theatre, has an outstanding reputation as one of the great birthplaces of contemporary Australian theatre, and as Sydney's most intimate and persuasive professional stage.

Griffin produces an annual subscription season of five main stage shows by Australian playwrights, and co-presents a season of theatre by independent artists. In addition to this, we support artists through professional development opportunities, and build new audiences through multi-artform events and education programs.
