MICROmacro

MICROmacro is a dynamic new music and live art performance by Zephyr Quartet and Jo Kerlogue. Organic and raw, the performance explores themes of nature on a micro and macro scale in a fifty-minute intimate sensory experience for the eyes and ears.

The audience is taken on an extraordinary journey with the artists as they craft a universe where worlds are created, destroyed, and then resolved into yet another entity entirely.

Jo Kerlogue uses charcoal and paint in a dynamic drawing style incorporating almost dance-like movements. Zephyr Quartet’s original semi-improvised score for live, amplified string quartet uses a wide palette of expression, from scratching insect-like percussion, to haunting whale-song, to driving, hypnotic rhythms and soaring, orchestral melodies. Together they create a remarkable live experience.

In a world where the refined, absolute and ordered are at the forefront of our existence, MICROmacro offers us a glimpse into the evolving, organic nature of life with a performance that is utterly unique every time it is witnessed.

MICROmacro is designed as a collapsible, flexible touring show suited to a wide range of venues, from warehouses to concert halls, galleries and public spaces.

Zephyr Quartet and Jo Kerlogue

Zephyr Quartet is a new music ensemble that exists to create exceptional performance experiences that resonate and communicate with audiences.

Since its inception in 1999, Zephyr Quartet has shown a continued determination to expand the boundaries of art music and how it is received by audiences. A firm believer in the power of the string quartet as a medium to communicate and explore complex relationships between society and art, Zephyr has achieved an enviable reputation for artistic excellence, innovation and audience development.

The quartet embraces collaborative practices, drawing inspiration from working with leading artists from backgrounds including visual arts, dance, poetry and theatre to produce work that is vital, current and courageous.

Recent projects include Toddlerthèque – a concert for toddlers with DJ TR!P (COME OUT Festival 2011), Hunting: Gathering – a collaboration with designer Khai Liew (SALA Festival 2010), and Impulse with Leigh Warren and Dancers (Holland Dance Festival 2009).

Jo Kerlogue's live art performances have occurred in festivals, street-parties, theatres and more, involving collaborations with musicians of all genres. Recent projects have incorporated technologies such as mobile phone and Nintendo wii controllers. Jo's work has been exhibited across Australia and Korea and she received a SALA Award nomination in 2009.
