deviator

“big changes often start with acts that look pointless at the time.” - john holloway, crack capitalism.

deviator is a darkly playful mixed reality artwork, inviting audiences to temporarily transform their city into a playground. using a customised iphone as their guide, audiences roam the city streets seeking out hidden audio instructions which encourage them to deviate from the norm. whilst en-route they encounter ‘the motherfcukers’, an elite team of sly mischief makers, intent on interrupting urban reality.

from the tiniest of private deviations to the boldest of public actions, deviator blends radically altered versions of childrens’ games with subtle live performance, placing audiences as interventionists out on the streets, ready to creatively disrupt the city, one game at a time. are you ready for some serious play?

a joyful, deviant, profound experience, intent on unhinging our beliefs about what cities bring to our daily lives and how we can subvert the official narratives of place.

this is a new manifestation of a body of work by perth-based tactical media arts group pvi collective, first commissioned by the 17th biennale of sydney in 2010, and is devised in every city with a team of local artists.

pvi collective

pvi collective is a tactical media arts group producing interdisciplinary artworks intent on the creative disruption of everyday life. every artwork aims to affect audiences on a personal and political level and is geared towards instigating tiny revolutions. we make performances, exhibit in galleries and stage interventions in public and corporate spaces. works are often highly participatory, physically demanding, site responsive and politically charged.

the group has toured extensively throughout australia with critically acclaimed tactical media performances tts: australia, transumer and resist and internationally with their site-specific panopticon and reform bodies of work. over the past decade pvi collective has played to over 250,000 people, performed 40 major works, instigated over 60 tactical interventions and featured in 15 exhibitions. the group has toured to internationally renowned venues including the national museum of singapore, the museum of contemporary arts (sydney), museo de contemporaneo (santiago), autonomous galeries (leipzig), galerie weimar (germany) and the 17th biennale of sydney.

we have performed interventions on the grounds of the sultan's palace in jogyakarta, on the steps of the sydney opera house, outside the presidential palace in chile and the doorstep of our local coles.
