Brisbane Powerhouse

Brisbane Powerhouse is Brisbane’s home of contemporary culture. The building was originally a working power station which electrified the city from the 1920s to the 1970s. Afterwards the building was abandoned to the city’s artists, rebels and fringe-dwellers who used it as a performance space, home and underground hang-out.

In 2000 Brisbane City Council redeveloped the building into a centre for arts and is now home to a year-round program of festivals and events. Cornerstone events include WTF: a festival of contemporary performance, Brisbane Comedy Festival, MELT, Brisbane Queer Film Festival, Queensland Cabaret Festival, IRL, Wonderland, and free music programs Livespark and Waxing Lyrical. Brisbane Powerhouse also presents a wide variety of cabaret, dance, music, theatre, comedy, visual arts, film, markets, circus and community events.

Brisbane Powerhouse is the host of APAM 2014, 2016 and 2018 and co-presents the market with the Australia Council.
