“A consummate feat in sound and dance.” RealTime

Kate Neal presents SEMAPHORE

Thu 25 Feb 5:30pm - 6:00pm

30 minutes Concert Hall, QPAC All Ages

Coded language comes to life through sound, light and movement.

Composer Kate Neal and director Laura Sheedy create a compelling and intriguing multimedia exploration of signalling, communication and miscommunication in Semaphore. Using physical, visual and aural encoding systems – Semaphore, Morse code, pennants, lights and binary code – three dancers and nine musicians synchronise in a complex coordinated choreography of bodies, music and illumination, to generate an immersive display of sound and vision. Choreography, animations and archival recordings of World War II signalmen add to Semaphore’s rich visual and aural composition.

Featuring regimented physical formations, outbreaks of cascading melody and intricate interplays of light and sound,Semaphore is an ingenious visual and sonic experience.

Meet the artist

Kate Neal

Australian composer Kate Neal creates musical works that dance and dance pieces that sing. Since 2006 she has been incorporating physical gesture, design, light and choreography into her composition. The result is a musical language that extends the existing techniques of the performing musician and creates a synthesis of experience for audiences where music is to be seen and heard.

The performative aspect of her work is as important as the aural. In many cases, these works provide a variety of unprecedented collisions of unlikely visual and musical cues.
