Join an imaginary girl and her interactive book and films on an adventure into the secret heart of a performing arts building.
What if a storybook could actually take you on a real life adventure to hidden and secret locations within the labyrinth of a performing arts building? upsidedowninsideout is an immersive journey-based show for 7–12 year olds that is an ingenious combination of a children’s book, self-guided tour, installation and puzzle, uniquely created for each venue it inhabits.
Guided by an interactive storybook, children and their adults follow clues and instructions as they discover hidden pathways on a quest for the secret at the heart of the building. Children act as both participant and guide – they are led by the book, but also lead their family members, finding clues, secret rooms and unexpected films from an imaginary world – or is it?

Meet the artist
one step at a time like this
one step at a time like this is a collaboration between four Melbourne contemporary theatre artists. Employing an expanded notion of theatre, one step create internationally acclaimed immersive, locative and place responsive works that allow audience-participants to see cities, architecture and others afresh.
They have been commissioned to create works for London 2012 Olympic Cultural Festival, Arts Centre Melbourne, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Arts House, Dublin Theatre Festival & City of Melbourne. Their work has received numerous awards and been the subject of award-winning documentaries in the US.
