A new work by Chiara Guidi, facilitated by Jeff Stein; produced by Campbelltown Arts Centre, Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio and Insite Arts in association with Adelaide Festival Jack and the Beanstalk
A musical fairy tale taking children on a wondrous adventure through theatrical storytelling, live music and puppetry
Theatrical storytelling, live music and puppetry combine in this new version of Jack and the Beanstalk. Prepare for a different twist on a well-known fairy tale in what promises to be a wild ride for children aged 7-11.
This new musical fairy tale is the result of an international collaboration, facilitated by Jeff Stein, between Australian artists and Italian artist Chiara Guidi of Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, a company critically acclaimed for creating some of the more confronting and original theatrical work over the past 10 years. The Australian artists include Scott Wright of Erth and performers Skye Gellman, Katia Molino, Drew Fairley and Christa Hughes.

Jeff Stein and Chiara Guidi
“If adults lose themselves within analytical and fragmentary visions of the real, children have an aesthetic-symbolic perception that drives them to the substantial unity of things. This is the reason why the theatre can still become the staging of sensations and emotions that words can’t express for the children yet. A fairy tale becomes the playground we enter into, paying particular attention to the sounds of individual words and the sonority emanating from the narrative line, and as we children, meaning both children and adults, play, we are guided towards a sensory vision that favours emotion over reason. The aim would be to discover the sounds and the noises produced by the objects surrounding us, to accompany and to emphasise all the dramatic weight of the story, right up until the final catharsis.” Chiara Guidi
Chiara Guidi is a co-founder of renowned Italian performance collective Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio specialising in vocality and dramatic rhythm. Chiara has built a body of research and performance work in theatre for young audiences and established an experimental theatre school for children. Her creation of work and research in this field has since been internationally acknowledged and Chiara regularly travels the world to run seminars and workshops for artists and pedagogues on art experiences with children.
Jeff Stein is a well-regarded independent, Australian performance artist and creative producer. With a strong interest in new types of work, he encourages audiences to engage with the unusual whilst providing opportunities for artists to broaden and expand their audiences. His artistic practice is hybrid in nature, and crosses into visual arts, philosophy, architecture, dance and theatre.
