“A different kind of listening… [an invitation to] bathe in those piano resonances.” ABC Classic FM

Luke Jaaniste and MESMERISM present TRANCE PIANO

Fri 26 Feb 10:00am - 11:30am 12:30pm - 2:00pm

90 minutes Expressions Dance Studio, Judith Wright Centre 16yrs+

Extreme sport meets classical music meets spiritual immersion.

Sonic artist Luke Jaaniste conjures up a beautiful, thunderous and transformative encounter playing the grand piano like you've never heard or seen before. Feel sonic vibrations and spatial palpations as you recline, sit or walk around this full-body performance installation.

Trance Piano is extreme sports meets classical music meets spiritual immersion. Jaaniste caresses and manipulates the piano with a range of unorthodox techniques — not just polite fingering, but thumping, slapping, finger locking, even punching. It’s a feat of marathon-like endurance and emotional drenching. And the sounds keep evolving and elaborating, escalating to a richness and sheer volume you may never have imagined, let alone experienced. The result is a ritual of epic and ambient proportions.

Meet the artist

Luke Jaaniste

Luke Jaaniste is a sonic artist who creates mesmerising performances and installations that invite audiences into hypnotic, immersive and transformative experiences of full-bodied listening. His training as classical composer, installation artist and communal facilitator fuse together in the range of ongoing 'expanded music' performance installations he creates, both solo and in collaboration.

These projects include Portal (for many vintage keyboards), Sub Terror (for a network of electric bass guitars) and Floor Choir (a lying-down experience for performers and audience). Jaaniste recently appeared at Asia Pacific Triennial at GOMA and undertook a Fresh Ground residency at Judith Wright Centre.
