BLOOD ON THE DANCE FLOOR

We hold memories in our blood. It connects us. It defines us.

A choreographer, dancer and writer from the Narangga and Kaurna nations of South Australia, Jacob Boehme was diagnosed with HIV in 1998. In search of answers, he reached out to his ancestors. Through a powerful blend of theatre, image, text and choreography, he pays homage to their ceremonies while dissecting the politics of gay, Blak and poz identities.

Blood on the Dance Floor is an unapologetic, passionate and visceral narrative exploring the legacies and memories of our bloodlines, our need for community and what blood means to each of us. Boehme’s striking monologue invokes his ancestral lineage in a contemporary quest for courage and hope.

ILBIJERRI is Australia's leading and longest running Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Theatre Company. The company creates challenging and inspiring theatre creatively controlled by Indigenous artists and each year tours work to national, regional and remote locations across Australia and around the world.

Collaborative relationships with communities and artists are at the heart of the creative process and all ILBIJERRI’s work is designed to empower and enlighten audiences.

Jacob Boehme is a Melbourne-based multi-disciplinary theatre maker of the Narangga and Kaurna Nations, South Australia. He trained in dance at NAISDA and is an alumni of the Victorian College of the Arts with a Masters in Writing for Performance (2014) and a Masters in Puppetry (2007).

He is also an alumni of the British Council’s ACCELERATE Indigenous Leadership Program and is Creative Director of YIRRAMBOI, the City of Melbourne’s First Nations Arts Festival. Blood on the Dance Floor is Boehme’s debut as a playwright and first developed as part of ILBIJERRI’s Black Writers Lab.
