NOIR TRAIL (DEATH KEEPS ME AWAKE)

An episodic journey into the night of the soul

noir trail is an episodic experience taking place over a series of nights across several locations around a performance venue. Alone on a street at night, your journey starts with the discovery of a transistor radio and ends with an encounter with a live post-rock band.

Tuning in to an enigmatic radio broadcast, you are guided through precincts, where cues for action are embedded. As you interact with locations (and their inhabitants) you uncover prompts that draw you further into your own journey. Narrative threads evolve over episodes creating a dialogue between the existing world, the narrative fiction and the audience’s imagination.

Employing an expanded definition of theatre, one step at a time like this works tend to be journey-based, mobile and immersive, combining digital media with live performance. With a strong focus on audience centrality, works allow audiences to slip seamlessly between real-world locale, virtual worlds and narrative elements.

The award-winning company (comprised of four Melbourne artists) is one of a handful of independent groups that consistently create and premiere Australian work internationally. One step has been commissioned to create works for 2012 London Olympics Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Melbourne Festival and Arts Centre Melbourne, amongst others.
