THE DIRECTOR

A charismatic Funeral Director and a performance artist uncover unexpected details of the death industry.

The Director is a bold new performance work starring charismatic Funeral Director Scott Turnbull and performance artist Lara Thoms. Taking this universal issue, but a topic that is taboo, the pair seeks to demystify, expose and expand elements of the death industry, with humour and poignancy.

Playing with the slippage between the roles of Funeral Director and theatre director, both creators act as 'Directors' throughout the performance, asking each other to perform tasks, share knowledge and give feedback on each other’s actions. The result is a spikey, funny and invigorating performance.

Lara Thoms creates socially engaged, site-specific and participatory possibilities in contemporary art and performance. She recently received an Australia Council Creative Fellowship to continue exploring different forms of engagement and presentation in this field.

Many of Thoms’ projects work with people beyond the arts including a 70-year-old pop star (A Singular Phenomenon, Malthouse), women’s clubs, (Before The Siren, Perth Festival), children (We All Know What's Happening, ArtsHouse), 150 people who visited public libraries and invited her back to their homes (The Experts Project, MCA), Indonesian metalheads (Jakarta Whiplash, Galley 4a) and an 87-year-old television broadcaster (Televisions, Performance Space).
