THE SPIRIT OF CHURAKI

An epic music production inspired by Aboriginal man Churaki, heralded as the Gold Coast’s first surf lifesaver.

Churaki, a Goodjingburra man of the Bundjalung tribe, performed the first documented act of lifesaving on the GoldCoast in 1911. The Spirit of Churaki honours this largely unknown heroic story and a rich line age of saltwater people.

Staring an extraordinary line-up of Australian Indigenous and non-Indigenous musicians, including Musical Director Brian Ritchie of Violent Femmes and The Break fame, this is a musical collaboration united by the spirit of surf.

With evocative visuals by renowned artist Vernon Ah Kee, this show rides the perfect wave between cyclonic surf rock, laid back oceanic beats and the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language.
