A beautiful exploration of the estrangements of desire. Truly astonishing. Theatre Notes

Performance Space presents The River Eats

19 February 10:10pm - 10:25pm Brisbane Powerhouse - The Hub Interdisciplinary / Hybrid Arts, Music Theatre, Opera, Cabaret Cabaret Adults (18+)

A fusion of handmade craft and live performance that takes you on a journey of complete sensory overload

Meet Pinky: a hyperactive, over caffeinated, attention deficient product of the overwhelming flow of data we receive in post-millennial technology. Pinky's hyped-up techno speed world is supported by a cacophony of digital sounds and a sensory feast of impressive costumes and enchanting visual moments that combine for one spectacular theatrical ceremony.

Created by urban mythmaker Justin Shoulder and collaborators, The River Eats is a thought-provoking, visually stunning fable of transformation and desire that uniquely fuses handmade craft with live performance. Based on the Taoist notion that every independent entity possesses an inherent opposite, this is an evolutionary tale of instinct navigating a world of material distraction.

Meet the artist

Justin Shoulder & Collaborators with Performance Space

Justin Shoulder is a multi-disciplinary artist whose interest lies in the creation and dissemination of urban mythologies. These stories are realised physically through sculptured 'Fantastic Creature' avatars he inhabits during live performance. Shoulder is co-founder of the collective The Glitter Militia who produce bent performance work, parties, films, exhibitions and immersive theatrical experiences in warehouses, nightclubs, at festivals and in theatre spaces throughout Australia.

The River Eats is presented by Performance Space, a cultural agency that facilitates new artistic projects and is interested in work that takes creative risks, experiments with artforms and creates transformative and captivating new experiences for audiences.
